Ukraine files lawsuit to International Court of Justice in Hague against Russian for occupation and racial discrimination

The President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko charged with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to file the lawsuit to the International Court of Justice against Russian for the occupation of Crimea and the war in the East of a country.

«For three years, the Russian Federation brutally violates the international law, within three years it implements the illegal annexation of Crimea, the illegal occupation of the East of the country on the territory of Donetsk and Lugansk regions, it implements a policy of extermination and discrimination in Crimea», Poroshenko said at a meeting with the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Affair of Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Dzhemilev, and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ukraine and the PA, as the official website of the President informs.

Poroshenko said that Ukraine intends to litigate with the country-aggressor for violation of the Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism.

«The second position in this lawsuit concerns the application of the Declaration on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination», said the President and emphasized that within the claim there was held 5 meetings and sent 45 notes.

The President reminded that about 1.7 million Ukrainians have now become internally displaced as a result of the Russian aggression against Ukraine:

«Those who remained in the Crimea and Donbas are tortured and persecuted. The activities of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people is forbidden, and there are committed other crimes those might be left unpunished».

Poroshenko also said that he controls the previous lawsuits against Russia in the context of violation the international maritime law.

«Ukraine raises questions about accountability for the illegal seizure by Russia the Ukrainian assets, the Ukrainian deposits, annexation the Ukrainian platforms, impediment of fisheries, infliction of environmental damage and other harm, which caused damage to Ukraine in the annexed Crimea and in the occupied Donbas», the President said on its website.

As it is reported, Poroshenko charged with the Ukrainian diplomats to file the lawsuit to the International Court of Justice in Hague today on Monday, January 16.
