Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Affairs of Crimean Tatars, Mustafa Dzhemilev hopes that the amendments developed by the Constitutional Commission’s working group to the chapter 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine on the status of Crimea will be adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

He said this on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 during his speech at the official meeting in honor of the 100-th anniversary of the 1st Kurultay of the Crimean Tatar people. Dzhemilev spoke in the Crimean Tatar language from the tribune in the Parliament.

Speaking about the fact that the Revolution of Dignity changed a lot in Ukraine, including the attitude to Crimea, Dzhemilev said that the government needed today to grant the peninsula the status of national autonomy.

«Suffice to say that for more than two decades, Crimean Tatars weren’t able to achieve the adoption by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine the Deportees Rights Recovery Law. This law was adopted only after the Revolution of Dignity and annexation of Crimea by Russian troops. Today many experts are inclined to believe that if Ukraine had conducted a thoughtful and systemic policy in Crimea, if the status of Crimea corresponded to the right of indigenous people to their self-determination, and would not have been some kind of amorphous hostel republic, then its occupation by Russia in 2014 was if not completely eliminated, though in any case extremely difficult», Dzhemilev stated.

Mustafa Dzhemilev highlighted in the end that he looked forward to a positive decision of the Verkhovna Rada when considering changes to the chapter 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine on the status of Crimea developed by the Constitutional Commission’s working group.
