Today is Vedzhie Kashka’s birthday, veteran of Crimean Tatar national movement
On Monday, April 24, the veteran of the Crimean Tatar national movement, Vedzhie Kashka is 83 years old.
Vedzhie Kashka was an associate of Peter Grigorenko, Andrey Sakharov and Mustafa Dzhemilev. She joined the national movement in the 1950s. Her family lived at that time nearby Tashkent. Since the 1960s, Vedzhie Kashka and her husband Bekir struggled returning to Crimea. However, the numerous attempts each time ended with another deportation. Vedzhie Kashka is a fearless woman. Thanks to people like she, the Crimean Tatar people have regained the right to live in their homeland. The fragile but strong-willed Vedzhie Khanym devoted her life to the struggle to come back to Crimea and became a symbol of the Crimean Tatars’ tenacity.
