Dzhemilev: Ukraine initiated an adoption the resolution on a protection of the environment at the occupied territories
At the last UN Assembly on the Environment Ukraine initiated an adoption the resolution on «Environmental Protection in areas affected by military conflict» supported by many countries.
As the authorized representative of the President of Ukraine for the Crimean Tatar people and the member of the parliament, Mustafa Dzhemilev wrote on his Facebook that is the first document within the last 20 years put the international attention to the environmental problems in the areas of armed conflict.
«The military conflict in the Eastern Ukraine and the occupation of Crimea is a crazy environmental catastrophe for those regions. We can’t assess the damage level inflicted on the vegetation in steppes, fauna and rivers. I have instructed our institutions trying to assess the damage in money equivalent, but there is no assessment methodology, and therefore it’s difficult to predict the consequences», said Ostap Semerak, the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine.
According to him, Ukraine is using all the international pressure tools to attract the world community’s attention to the environmental policy in the occupied territories. We are talking about the resolution on «The Environmental Protection in areas affected by military conflicts».
«When the military conflict is finished, and it will definitely happen, these resolutions will become the conclusive tools while the court’s case. It should be done, and we do it», said the minister.
