On Wednesday, June 7, the Crimean Supreme Court held the 125th hearing on Akhtem Chiygoz’s case.

Chiygoz's lawyer Nikolay Polozov informed that in his video message that was posted on Facebook by the first deputy chairman of Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people Nariman Dzhelalov.

«Today’s key point was a test for humanity of the Russian court and the Russian government in general. It has been recently found out that Akhtem Chiygoz’s mother Aliye Abduraimovna Chiygoz has a serious incurable disease. Akhtem Chiygoz being sentenced for almost two and a half years did not have the opportunity to meet her. Moreover, relatives hid from him a fact about the serious illness. In recent days because of the extreme worse medical indications, the defense appealed the court to give Akhtem Chiygoz a chance to see his mother and possibly to say goodbye. Two applications were filed. The first is about the possibility of allowing Chiygoz a short-term attendance under escort to meet with his mother. For now she can’t move and come to the detention center. The court considered such an opportunity not to be provided. Then the defense filed a petition to change the restraint measure of Akhtem Chiygoz for house arrest», Nikolay Polozov said.

According to the lawyer, the Russian legislation provides changing the restraint measure if the new circumstances were not investigated by the courts of previous instances. His mother's health state was not known those days when the first instance court extended the restraint measure until July 8, and the appeal court had approved this decision.

«A court also refused this petition. Thus, there is place to any kind of humanity in this process. In fact, court deprives Chiygoz the opportunity to see his mother until something irreparable might happe», Nikolay Polozov said.

According to him, the defense will file objection to the court, «since the principles of humanism spelled out in the Russian laws are cynically and brazenly trampled by people in robes».

The court session will be continued after the lunch break.
